If you can believe him- Garcia makes reference to this in an interview done just before his death. According to him, beginning in at least the early 70s they actually avoided it at work, which matches up with the Weir interview. He relates a story of how he sampled icing on a birthday cake in '71 or '72 (I forget) that he knew was dosed, but it looked so good that he figured if he just tasted the icing it would be OK. Well. the ICING was dosed heavily and he tells about his subsequent struggle to play through the paranoid hallucination that ensued. He used to play for silver THEN he played for life.

I think we project it on them more than they did. Not to say that they did not indulge in a lot of other recreating nearly continuously.

If you check out other interviews, they did not consider it a hard drug. They always lump it in with herb, adding further confusion to the issue.
